The main symbol of the New Year – a living Christmas tree or pine tree – must sooner or later be dismantled and taken out of the house. And then the question arises – when should you remove the Christmas tree at home? Some people leave the Christmas tree decorated until mid-January, others take it out on March 8, as if to extend the holidays. How to do it right? This is what fortune tellers, feng shui, the church and doctors say about it.

When to remove a Christmas tree

If you believe in predictions, then it is not worth “undressing” the Christmas tree immediately after the New Year holidays and taking it out of the house. There is a belief that the Christmas tree should not be removed until January 14 – the Old New Year. It is believed that it is up to this moment that the fir tree attracts positive energy to the home. That is when you have already met the whole new year, then you can say goodbye to the green beauty with a calm soul.

There is also another opinion on when to remove the Christmas tree – the Orthodox say that it should be done before the Three Kings Day, which according to the old style is celebrated on January 19, and according to the new style – January 6. The Three Kings Day marks the end of Holy Week, so there is no point in keeping the Christmas tree at home longer.

The Feng Shui system has its own answer to the question of when to dismantle the Christmas tree: the tree should stay at home until the Chinese New Year. In 2025, it will be on January 29 and will last until February 12. True, there is a chance that by this time the live Christmas tree will begin to crumble. Therefore, the same Feng Shui advises to remove the spruce (or pine) and place any houseplant in its place, and hang a red or gold decoration above it – to attract finances and well-being to the home.

It would be correct to inspect the condition of the tree: if the tips of the twigs have turned brown and the needles have begun to crumble mercilessly – it is time to remove them. If there are allergy sufferers or small children in the house, it is better to take the tree out immediately after the holidays so that it does not accumulate dust, doctors advise.

How to properly disassemble a Christmas tree

According to fortune tellers, in order to attract money to the house, you should disassemble the Christmas tree as follows:

  • First, remove the garlands, sequins and balls, and at the very end remove the top, since it is responsible for attracting the pleasant;
  • remove the Christmas tree only during the day and it is desirable that it can be seen by neighbors;
  • You can’t throw a Christmas tree in the trash – it’s believed that this is how you can take away happiness.

And if the Christmas tree ornament accidentally breaks while “undressing” the tree, you should immediately come up with a wish – it will definitely come true.

Where to throw away a Christmas tree

It is not worth throwing a Christmas tree in the garbage, as it is also not environmentally friendly. It is better to cut or burn the Christmas tree. In many large cities, there are reception points for Christmas trees and pines, where trees are given a second life: chips or mulch are made from needles. If you do not have such a center, take the tree to the municipal institutions, they will help you safely get rid of the tree.
