The microwave is one of those appliances that, although we use it every day, we tend to neglect when it comes to cleaning. Food splashes and residues can quickly build up, forming a layer of dirt that eventually becomes a difficult problem to overcome. While many people opt for chemical products, there are home-made alternatives that are not only effective but also much cheaper and safer.
A combination of vinegar and baking soda for microwave cleaning
One such solution is a combination of vinegar and baking soda, two ingredients common in almost every home and which have proved to be powerful allies when it comes to keeping the microwave clean, disinfected and free of odours that can be very annoying.
Vinegar has antimicrobial properties, making it an ideal natural disinfectant for cleaning appliances, including microwaves , and combining it with baking soda increases its cleaning power as the two ingredients work together to break down stubborn dirt and remove unpleasant odours.
This simple trick requires half a litre of water, a tablespoon of white vinegar and a tablespoon of baking soda. Start by pouring the water and vinegar mixture into a microwave-safe bowl and heating it for about 10 minutes.
The steam generated during this time will help loosen grease and stains on the microwave walls. Leaving the container inside the appliance for a further 10 minutes will allow the vinegar to continue to work and the moisture released will soften stubborn dirt. This process not only cleans but also disinfects the inside of the microwave, removing any bacteria or germs that may be present.
After letting the vinegar and water mixture sit in the microwave, it’s time to get started with the baking soda. Take a soft sponge, sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda on it and wipe the sides of the microwave. You’ll see how the baking soda traps dirt and residue that the vinegar has already loosened. It is important to remember not to use an abrasive sponge as this can damage the inner lining of the appliance.
