California: he won the lottery and thought it was $1,000, but he claimed it and became a millionaire

The man got the biggest and luckiest surprise of his life.

What started out as a simple lottery scratcher for a resident of Los Angeles, California, turned out to be an unexpected twist of fate, upon discovering that the prize he won was actually much greater than the advertised $1,000.

In a press release, the California Lottery reported that Jeffry Figueroa bought a Scratchers Winter Magic Multiplier ticket at Koko’s Liquor, believing he had won $1,000. However, when he went to the California Lottery office in Santa Fe Springs to claim his prize, he received the surprise of his life: his ticket was worth $1,000,000.

“When they told me, I was shaking so much I could hardly sign the claim form,” Figueroa told the California Lottery. “It was so surreal. I still can’t believe it!” The lucky winner had planned to use the money to pay his rent, but now his plans have changed dramatically with this unexpected fortune. The Koko’s Liquor store, where the winning ticket was purchased, was also awarded a $5,000 bonus.

Other lucky winners of the California Lottery in 2025

According to information from the California Lottery, Figueroa was not the only one to start 2025 with a big surprise, as five other players in the Golden State have also become millionaires thanks to scratch cards.

With these lucky winners, the California Lottery has added several millionaires to its list in the first days of 2025, demonstrating that luck can change your life in an instant.
