If you have old computer speakers at home, you have a treasure: you can use them to improve the sound of your Smart TV.

Many will remember them, others will have seen them in an old internet café and some more in a bazaar. I’m talking about computer speakers. That’s right, in the past desktop PCs didn’t have built-in speakers, so you had to connect these peculiar objects by cable.

Over time, these devices have disappeared from everyday life, although we can still see some models in online stores or with some streamers. The truth is that, some time ago, they ceased to be essential products. However, if there is still one of these speakers in your house, don’t throw it away; it could be useful for improving the sound of your television.

What are the advantages of using PC speakers on your TV

Before you even think about installing these speakers on your smart TV, you should know something: this recommendation is aimed at people whose TVs do not have sufficient sound quality. That is, old TVs or 40 – and even 50-inch screens without any kind of audio certification; if you try it on a latest model with Dolby Vision and 65 inches, you might be a little disappointed. That said, the main advantages are:

  • Cost savings: Computer speakers are usually much cheaper than dedicated sound systems for televisions.
  • Easy installation: We will explain this in depth later, but for now you just need to know that the process is simple and does not require a lot of technical knowledge. In most cases, you only need a cable or a Bluetooth connection.
  • Improved sound quality: As we said, this only applies to small, old or entry-level screens. The speakers will give you enough quality to enjoy movies, series or video games with greater clarity and depth.
  • Compatibility: Most TVs have standard audio outputs, such as 3.5 mm jack, RCA or HDMI ARC, making it easy to connect to computer speakers.
  • Space: Unlike sound systems, PC speakers are compact and don’t take up much space, ideal for small rooms or minimalist setups.

How to connect a PC speaker to your TV

Connecting your computer speakers to your TV is easier than you think, however, you need to know the type of connection on both devices. Let’s start with the 3.5 mm jack port. In this case you just have to locate the 3.5 mm audio output on your TV, or the RCA sockets, the classic red and white ones; connect one end of the audio cable to the TV and the other end to the speakers; turn on the speakers and adjust the audio output to the default setting on your TV.

If the connection is wireless, via Bluetooth, we only need to activate pairing mode on the speakers; on the television, look for the Bluetooth option and select “Pair device”; select the speakers from the list of available devices; once paired, it will only be a matter of adjusting the volume.

Finally, for HDMI ARC mode, connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI ARC port on your TV to the HDMI port on the speakers (if they are equipped for this); turn on both devices and select HDMI ARC input in the TV’s audio menu; adjust the volume and verify that the sound is heard correctly.
