NFC, mobile data, WiFi… Our Android is a device that is constantly emitting and receiving signals, so sometimes it’s worth cutting them off at the roots to get a good night’s sleep. This also applies to bedtime: it’s a good idea to turn off WiFi at night. It will also bring a radical improvement.
Leaving everything on is more convenient, but not necessarily more efficient: if anything, it’s clear that the more wireless connections our mobile phone has active, the more battery it uses. This is also true for WiFi, so one of the most important factors is to keep it switched off when you’re not using it. For example, when you’re sleeping.

Having WiFi on while you sleep doesn’t affect your sleep
There are rumours about wireless connectivity and health, but current scientific evidence does not show that home WiFi is harmful. So switching off your phone’s WiFi while you sleep will not benefit your sleep, nor will it have anyother health benefits.
As we mentioned at the beginning, staying actively connected consumes energy. Moreover, the router itself is an energy thief: although its consumption is not exaggerated compared to a fridge, theannual cost can be between 12 and 24 euros on average, depending on the model, the use and the time the router is switched on (the power typically ranges from 8/10 W in average use and up to 30/40 W in intense gaming sessions).
The router typically consumes a few cents each day. If the router is powerful and the WiFi is used for gaming, the electricity consumption can increase to more than 15 cents per day.
Obviously WiFi doesn’t affect your health or sleep, and the main reason to turn off the connection is energy, so let’s see why it’s advisable to turn off WiFi on your Android phone.
Yes, you’ll save battery power. But not too much
Keeping the connection off reduces the phone’s energy consumption. What’s more, if you turn off the router at night, this reduction in consumption will be visible on your electricity bill, although it will probably not exceed one euro per month. Turning off WiFi on your phone and unplugging your router during your respite will benefit your economy.
We recommend disconnecting data on your phone, both mobile and WiFi: this will prevent you from viewing notifications when you are in bed. In fact, it’s best to keep it in the dining room so that the bedroom is a mobile-free space. That way, you’ll be more relaxed when you sleep.
Your phone also benefits from rest
If you “switch off your brain” when you sleep at night, why not do the same with your phone? In this sense, it’s not a bad idea to upgrade your WiFi connection, especially if you’re used to finding it hard to connect. In fact, when you’re asleep is a great time to reboot your router. Or keep it switched off, as we mentioned earlier.
Extra security
Nighttime is often the time of year for router attacks: taking advantage of the time when people are asleep is a good way to leave as few traces as possible. Therefore, disconnecting the WiFi connection from your phone will reduce the chances of them getting into your router (by limiting the WPA attack); it will also reduce future unauthorised access to your home devices.
While the improvements are not dramatic, it does provide more incentive: it is recommended to disable your phone’s WiFi connection at night. And if you leave it on the bedside table, all the better.
