No more wasting water down the toilet? A French plumber’s invention to combat drought

In every home, thousands of litres of drinking water are used through this sanitary appliance. A figure that could be reduced to zero, which would also lead to great savings.

Sidi Drici, a French plumber, has created a system that allows the reuse of shower and sink water to fill the toilet tank, providing an economical and ecological solution to water consumption in the home. This recycling device, which makes use of so-called grey water, stands out for its simplicity and its positive impact on saving drinking water, responding to the growing need to manage this essential resource more efficiently.

We must not forget that drought is one of the most serious environmental challenges facing Spain and many other parts of the world today. Prolonged water shortages, caused by both natural factors and climate change and the inefficient use of resources, directly affect people, so practical and simple solutions like this are always welcome.

One of the main advantages of Sidi Drici’s invention is that it is a system that can be installed in existing bathrooms. The technology uses a tank that collects water from the shower and the sink and a filter that retains hair and other impurities. The water is then disinfected using chlorine tablets and, once treated, it is redirected to the cistern, eliminating the need to use drinking water with every flush.

Savings and sustainability

The water consumption of a standard cistern is between 6 and 9 liters per flush, depending on how the valve is configured. This means that, on average, a family of four can use up to 55 cubic meters of water a year just through the toilet. A figure that could be reduced almost entirely and that, in addition, would allow savings of around 235 euros per year for families.

The inventor, Drici, is not only known in his community for his work as a plumber and for his activity on social networks, but also for his social commitment. Proof of this is that he has decided not to patent his creation so that it can be used by all those who are committed to the environment and to the responsible use of such an essential resource as water.
