The Internet is present in many day-to-day tasks and the home router has become one of the most important objects in the house, so having the fastest connection possible can make our routine much easier.
What many people don’t know is that it is not necessary to buy a repeater or amplifier to improve the quality of the Wi-Fi network, as there is a configuration of the router that can speed up our downloads and our navigation through web portals.
In addition to increasing speed, this change can also bring stability to the network and solve various connection problems. We are talking about DNS, which stands for Domain Name System, whose function is to convert web addresses into IP numbers. In this way, devices can access content on the internet.
If you have never changed your DNS, it will be set to that of your telephone company by default. The domain in question may be reliable, but it is not the fastest.
By changing it to one of the free DNS servers available, you can browse the web faster.
This is not the only advantage, as many alternative DNS servers also offer greater privacy and protection against malware, phishing or spyware.
How to change your DNS server
To change your Domain Name System you just have to follow a few very simple steps, which can be done with any device. These are the steps you need to follow to access the settings of your router and modify the DNS server:
- Open a web browser and type in the IP address of your router. This is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, but it may vary.
- Log in with the username and password provided by your internet provider (or the ones you have configured).
- Look for the DNS configuration, which is usually found under “Advanced Settings” or “Network Settings”.
- Modify the DNS servers: look for the fields where the IP addresses of the DNS servers are entered.
- Replace the current DNS addresses with the ones you want to use.
Most recommended DNS servers
You can use one of the most popular DNS servers, such as Google Public DNS – which offers speed and stability: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4-, Cloudflare – the fastest and easiest to remember 1.1.1.1: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1-, or OpenDNS – the most secure and with content filtering: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220-.
It should be borne in mind that there are routers that do not allow you to change the DNS, so if you cannot find the option, consult the manual for your router or the technical support service of your internet provider.
