Dubai, the mecca of luxury in the United Arab Emirates, continues to grow in width but especially in height. Its skyscrapers continue to challenge the limits of construction, with projects such as the Muraba Veil, designed by Spanish studio RCR Arquitectes, or a 431-metre skyscraper with a tropical jungle inside and a swimming pool. But its skyline is still dominated by the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building at 828 metres.
In the same building, at 396 metres, is the penthouse, considered the tallest on the planet, which has just been sold for 51 million dollars (over €49 million). Spread over two floors and covering 1,950 square metres, this luxurious residence offers a panoramic view of the city and the Gulf through huge panoramic windows.

The penthouse is accessed by the only private elevator in the skyscraper, providing the ultimate in exclusivity. Its interior design features floor-to-ceiling windows, letting in natural light and spectacular views both day and night. It also features a private swimming pool, several leisure and relaxation areas and a host of exclusive amenities including a private lounge, gym, Japanese gardens and a 24-hour concierge service.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this property is the uncertainty as to whether it really is the world’s tallest penthouse. Invest Dubai Real Estate claims a height of over 396 metres, but without a precise figure it is difficult to know whether it beats the 472-metre penthouse at New York’s Central Park Tower . Beyond the specifics, the penthouse is a symbol of luxury and exclusivity in Dubai, where the Burj Azizi Tower, a skyscraper that wants to eclipse the 725-metre Burj Khalifa, and a 7-star ultra-luxury hotel are already under construction.
But the Burj Khalifa is still the undisputed landmark of the Dubai skyline. Not only is it the tallest skyscraper in the world, it also holds other impressive records. With 163 residential floors, its construction was a milestone in modern engineering. Its observation deck on the 148th floor, at 555 metres, was for many years the highest in the world, and the At.mosphere restaurant on the 122nd floor, recognised as the highest on the planet.
Another surprising fact is the Burj Khalifa’s resource consumption. Its air-conditioning system produces enough condensate to fill 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools a year, and the water is recycled to maintain the building’s gardens.
The building also boasts one of the fastest lifts in the world, reaching speeds of 36 km/h and taking visitors to the top in seconds. Its design, inspired by the Hymenocallis flower, reflects the influence of Islamic architecture, combining aesthetics and functionality to cope with the extreme desert weather conditions.
