We all eat them, but few people know that these common foods are toxic for your dogs.

If you have pets, you’re sure to have experienced this scenario: you’re eating and suddenly your dog stops next to you, sits down and keeps looking at you with such big eyes that they seem about to pop out. Those eyes, similar to those of Puss in Boots, make you want to share the food on your table with him; your pet has won.

However, you must be careful, because there are foods in your daily diet that could be harmful to your pets. Perhaps the best known of all is chocolate, that sweet treat that is one of the most popular and tasty, but which is dangerous if it ends up in the mouth of your little lomitos. As well as that one, there are other foods that you should not give them.

Why chocolate is bad for dogs

As we said before, one of the foods that dogs should not eat is chocolate because of the theobromine, a component of chocolate that humans metabolize easily, but lomitos do not. This substance is found in cocoa beans and, therefore, in the recipes of many of the chocolates that we can find on the market.

The accumulation of theobromine in a dog’s body can trigger severe poisoning, so it is best to prevent our pets from eating any food with this substance, as we are not sure how much concentration they may have and how much damage it can cause. So, yes, it can be said that chocolate is toxic to dogs.

What other human foods can dogs not eat?

Experts, such as Dr. Carlos Gutiérrez Olvera, from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics at UNAM, recommend that dogs be given a balanced diet, with kibble and food suitable for them, such as boiled eggs, fresh fish, rice, as well as vegetables and fruits such as lettuce, celery, broccoli, carrots, spinach, bananas, pears, melon, apple and watermelon.

However, foods that you should not give your baby are:

  • Grapes
  • Avocado
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Chocolate
  • Milk
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Popcorn
  • Walnuts
  • Almonds
  • Bones
